Bega is a town in the south-east of New South Wales, Australia in the Bega Valley Shire. It is the economic centre for the Bega Valley.
One claim is that place name Bega is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning “big camping ground”. Another claim is that it is a corruption of the Aboriginal word “Bika” meaning “beautiful”.
The Bega Valley Shire is located at the south-eastern extremity of New South Wales and has been identified as the regional centre plus the three main towns; Merimbula, Eden and Bermagui. There are also a number of villages and locations which provide services for the local community.
The Shire’s coastal fringe extends from Wallaga Lake in the north to Cape Howe and the Victorian border in the south.
Collectively this 225 kilometre section of coastline forms the beautiful Sapphire Coast.
Approximately 73 percent of the Shire’s 6,280 square kilometres are protected National Park or State Forest.
The Shire has a relatively small population of approximately 33,133 people (2006 census data).
