Homelessness Resource Guides for Queanbeyan NSW

Queanbeyan is a regional centre in the Southern Tablelands in south-eastern New South Wales adjacent to the Australian Capital Territory. The city’s mixed economy is based on light construction, high technology, manufacturing, service, retail and agriculture. It is the council seat of the Queanbeyan City Council. At the 2011 census, Queanbeyan had a population of 37,991.

Following the founding of Canberra, Australia’s federal capital, just 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the west, Queanbeyan has become an integral part of the capital city’s economy. The word Queanbeyan is the anglicised form of Quinbean – an Aboriginal word meaning “clear waters”.

Located on the Queanbeyan River 291 km south-west of Sydney via Tarago and Bungendore and 18 km south-east of the centre of Canberra. It is essentially in NSW although parts of the city sprawl over the ACT border. Queanbeyan is situated at an elevation of 576 m.

Agricultural and pastoral industries are still strong in the area (sheep, cattle, wool, an abattoir, nurseries, honey, wine, hay and barley) while the city has strong building, manufacturing, service, retail, recreation and tourism sectors. Many residents work in nearby Canberra.

The City of Queanbeyan covers only 52 square kilometres and is only a 15-20 minutes drive from both Canberra City and Tuggeranong, 7-8 minutes from Canberra Airport, 1 ½ hours from the coast, and an easy 3 hour drive to the centre of Sydney.
